I attend church with sister Maxine Jenkins and we have prayed much for Tommie. I attended Centerville Baptist Church with her and remember a beautiful vibrant young woman. I have grown to admire her from hearing of her tenacious spirit and her refusal to allow cancer to control her life. Truly an inspiration! Our prayers are with you as her loving family.

Dear Doug, Johnathan, the Graham and McComas Families,

Like everyone else, I was very saddened to hear of Tommie's passing. I have known Tommie for nearly sixty years. The McComas family and the Shy family have been friends for over eighty years.
There were nine McComas siblings and ten Shy siblings. There were deep, lasting bonds between the two families and deep friendships that have remained over the years.
I went to Centerville Elementary School with Tommie. She was two years older than I, but I remember her as being one of the pretty, friendly girls in "The Big Room."
(We had two rooms at the school--
The Little Room (1-3) and the Big Room 4-6). As a child I remember going to visit Tommie and her family at their dairy farm (Hilltop Farm). Everyone was always welcome there. Tommie's parents, Nellie and Herb, were always kind to us children. The first time I ever tasted a pizza was one Tommie made from a mix (Chef BoyArdee). I thought it was the most wonderful thing I ever tasted. I fondly remember taffy pulls at the McComas farm. Tommie, like all her siblings, inherited a beautiful mind. All of the McComas children were brilliant. I can say this with certainty because I have taught school for 42 years. Tommie worked hard on the farm and helped Nellie with the chores. I remember Tommie always had boxes of petunias on the window sills and she loved raising her castor beans (Dog Ticks). Tommie did very well in high school and then moved and married a wonderful man.
She and Doug traveled and moved from place to place. Tommie's life was full and exciting. Tommie made friends in all the places she lived. She traveled to Ireland and visited her ancestors. She and Doug were avid golfers and enjoyed themselves for years playing golf. Even though Tommie "did well" for a country girl, she never forgot her roots.
She would come home and help her mother whenever possible. I have never, never, seen anyone so brave and courageous as Tommie during her fight with cancer. Although Cancer may have claimed her in the end, she gave Him the " Battle of Battles." We can all learn from this wonderful woman. I have had the privilege of giving eulogies at Tommie's mother's funeral and her brother, Frank's memorial service. Because of the flu, I am unable to attend her service with my brother and sisters. Again, my condolences to all.
Sincerely,
Vernon Dale Shy,
Lifetime friend and neighbor

Dear Doug and Jonathan,
I was so saddened and grieved to learn of Tommie's passing. She fought for so long and with such determination. She was such a wonderful person, with a vibrant personality, full of life and so gracious.
As we have been your neighbors for many years, I remember when our daughter Megan was a child she would go over, ring the doorbell and say "Mrs. Graham, do you want to bake some cookies?" Of course, Tommie would say yes. She loved all of her neighbors and we always knew if we needed anything, we could count on her.
I will always remember and admire her determination and drive to not allow anything to control her life. She had the most beautiful smile and was always so positive. She will be greatly missed. Please know we will be here for the both of you should you need anything.
Love,
The Candee Family

Only relatively recently did I have the pleasure of knowing Tommie, as a result of playing the piano at Montgomery care center for the monthly Birthday celebration that Tommie organized through the Montgomery Womens club. She was always such a delight and so full of kindness and optimism. She will be sadly missed and I extend my sincerest sympathy to all her family at this time of loss.
